Improv Master (and Superstar DJ) Andrew Wowk Joins the LMA Roster

Well, we know who is gonna DJ every single LMA party from now on: Mr. Andrew Wowk. Not only is Andrew a well known and respected performer in the Sydney Improv scene, he’s also deft on the decks. You can check out some of his off-stage (in booth?) talent at Resident Advisor, on his SoundCloud, or on MixCloud where you can hear a great set from Chinese Laundry. But hey, you really just want to know what his Improv Jams be about. Right?

Andrew was introduced to improv through binge-watching Whose Line Is It Anyway? in the 90’s and years later he finally jumped in the deep end and tried it for himself. He got his start by attending a few TheatreSports jams at the University of Sydney and quickly realised he wanted to throw himself completely into the world of Improv and soak up every bit of it he could and he has since trained in both long- and short-form.

Since those first steps, Andrew has gone on to become a firm fixture in the Improv scene in Sydney. He has performed in numerous shows, including The First Thursday Impro Club at The Roxbury (which he is now part of the organising committee for), The Cranston Cup, Likewise at Hive Bar, and Improv Circus at Hermann’s Bar. He is also part of the team who run the weekly Lybrary Impro jams at Nauti Studios, which are designed to bring together improvisers of all levels to share knowledge with one another, try out new ideas, and connect in a playful, low-pressure environment.

Andrew’s teaching style is highly adaptable depending on the situation. For first-timers, he is nurturing, accessible and focuses on creating a pressure-free environment where students can feel comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone. As players become more experienced, Andrew retains his supportive and non-judgmental style, but also encourages them to push themselves and feel vulnerable, rather than become complacent.

We are super stoked to have Andrew on board and look forward to some great classes, shows – and LMA dance parties – in the near future.
